Since Ramadan changes pattern of daily life, the General Administration of Civil Defence has urged homemakers to take extra care while cooking to prevent fires and other accidents in the kitchen. ââ¬Å"Care must be taken while handling electrical equipment, gas cylinders, sharp tools and oils. Cooking tools should be kept away from the reach of children,â⬠an ROP official said. According to statistics from the General Directorate of Traffic, 621 car accidents in 2010 during Ramada n resulted in 67 deaths and left 754 injured. Roads become more dangerous because of people over-speeding and due to lack of concentration. ââ¬Å"Many of the accidents were recorded before the maghrib when motorists usually speed to be home for the prayers and iftar meals with their families. â⬠the official said. Many who have offices far from home have to drive for long distances to be with their families. Driving on an empty stomach requires more effort and attention from the driver. He said that fasting and staying awake during the night make people feel tired and drowsy. This can lead to cars veering off the road or collisions. As a preventive measure, ROP has advised drivers to take a break if they feel tired. ââ¬Å"If the driver feels sleepy, he or she should immediately divert attention to something else to stimulate the brain and body, like rolling down the car window to talk to others, stretching a little or parking the car to take a short walk,â⬠the official said. It is imperative to abide by traffic rules and not speed. It is better to reach home late than neverâ⬠he said.
